are saws supposed to break from a spider spiting at them?

They break when you put a cobweb in front of them, yes.

Why? Because FC deems it so.

it's not a big problem as i had a gap in my mob trap where spiders would see me. now it's fixed, but i was assuming that saws cut or destroy all the soft materials. you'll never stop learning then !

Yup, that's exactly right. Throw in "giant spider web capable of entangling human sized creatures" and I think it's pretty straightforward.
