It feels weird that stair recipes make differing amounts

As per title. Wood, stone, white stone, and white cobble make 6 per crafting but blocks like stone brick, nether brick, black stone, sandstone, and a few others make 4.
Although I don't find it strange that loose varieties make 8 because that makes sense to be able to rearrange rather than cut the blocks.
