I hit Update. Is there an official course of action? Or do I have to dig around bittorrent for a 1.2.5 jar?

mcNostalgia might do it for you, although that might not be immediately updated:

On Windows you can go to folder properties and select previous version, choose one you before the incident and select restore. These previous versions are made when your computer makes a system restore point so it could be a hit or miss.
Why don't you have a saved backup jar btw?

Is sharing the minecraft .jar allowed here?
Silly question but not I'm not entirely clear with the forum rules.

This may not be on for all systems..

Fuck no, and it's not a question of forum rules, but what is legal.

Definitely not allowed here or anywhere.

No.

Also, encouraging torrents of vMC content is disgusting, and should be seen as the above.

No it is not. You might want to read the terms of service that Mojang has in place. All of them apply here.

Ugh colossal brainfart on my part.
I think it was because I was checking our those downgrade tools on the MC forums, really not sure what to make of those to be honest.

Well they're legal, as they only distribute patches, not the actual files. That's why it's still up there on the forums.

I think I saw somewhere around page 1185 (plus or minus a few) of the Risu's Mod thread (on the MCFs) a link to the 1.2.5 minecraft jar from a minecraft.net link (which would make it official). Might be something worth looking into.

Just use mcnostalgia. It works for all platforms, and I've had no trouble with it.

Also, if you happen to use mcpatcher, it makes a backup of minecraft.jar in bin/, which you can use to go back to that version.

I actually downloaded a second .minecraft folder with 1.3 installed and then copied the version file into my .minecraft with BTW installed so that I wouldn't lose anything by accident. If you get back to 1.2.5, you might want to do that too so the game doesn't even give you the option until you want 1.3, at which point you can force update.

If you're on a Mac, you can just use Time Machine to find a 1.2.5 jar from a few days ago.

Shameless self-promotion: http://sargunster.com/btwforum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4102

One other neat thing about Dropbox, is that it does maintain a "Previous Version" system, so, you can go in and retrieve a copy of the .jar file from before you clicked update. Basically, the same idea that everyone else has already mentioned, however more reliable, in some cases.
