I want to kick myself

So when i updated to 1.2.5 to try to do a MP hunger games thing with my brother I thought I had backed up my game. Sadly it appears I was mistaken. The copy fumbled somewhere along the way and backed up most of the minecraft directory but not the saves! I had no other backups. It wasn't a really old world but old enough for me to have scrounged together a half stack of steel blocks, and it's all gone. I'm so bummed. That is all.

OH, I know the feeling. When my computer committed hard drive suicide I lost my old Better than Buildcraft world. I wasn't playing it anymore, but it had my beautiful turbine windmill in it, and a really nice cubist modern house.

The only reason I didn't lose Castaway as well is because I uploaded it here. So there's one solid reason to make your world available to download in your sig: you can get it back yourself.

Sadly mine was purely the result of my own stupidity. Didn't even check the backup after I made it.

If you have windows 7 you could possibly restore the files lost.

Or,

Maybe check the recycle bin possibly?

I hate it for ya man... Sucks dung.

Well there is a way to make minecraft save in your dropbox, so every single thing you do is backed up in the net..

I know that. Sadly it does not help me at all now with my save wholly and completely gone...

Have you tried using data recovery programs?
Deleted data does not actually get physically removed from the disk, it just has it's reference to it in the file system removed.

Try PhotoRec, as it's free and open-source. Or, if you don't like CLIs, try Recuva.

Fair warning: That will recover EVERYTHING you have ever deleted that hasn't gotten written over yet. You'll need a large external drive to dump to. It also does not recover folder tree structure or filenames. You will get a crap-ton of unnammed files in a single folder you will have to delete manually. And if you share your computer with others, you will learn their taste in porn.

Uh... what program are you talking about?
I've never come across a program which behaves like that.

Huh? Pretty much most of the recovery programs work like that :P
