FlowerChild wrote: 60K a year is certainly not an exceptional salary for a programmer with a few years experience.
The average first salary for an engineer (so 4 1/2 years studying, 6 months work experience) who went to my College (don't know if it's the correct term) is about 36k euros a year. (around 47K USD with today's rates). To my opinion, it's quite VERY good for a start. And above the average salary in France.

If I succeed, I would be happy to try and verify your statement ! (not saying it isn't true, just looking forward to it ^^)

One of the two.
I didn't say "close to" for nothing, but yes, I tend to put dollars and euros value closer to what they are.
Yet...
757 euros a month, for one person... It probably is close to the strict minimum necessary to live in France, in a small village, eating pasta every day and never going to cinema.
Now double that and I'm pretty sure you can have 5 nice years.
I've never made more than that. My latest (and highest so far) paycheck was 730 I think.

2 more weeks till the next paycheck, still have 330, all monthly expenses paid.

With that sort of money... Well, let's be honest, I'd probably squander it within the first month.

with that much money, I'd pay off my house.

Then either me or my spouse quits our job, because there's half our expenses gone in one fell swoop. With no day care costs and no mortgage, we only need one income. I find it sad that if I was still an architect, I would make that in 2 years tops.

I would have preferred that it went directly back into the game. I'm sure the team is happy but it isn't as though Minecraft couldn't use more support considering how big the game is. I know there are issues with stepping on toes and such but really the game could use either a dedicated debugger/optimizer or a tester. Heck even something as a dedicated community manager who collects user feedback and popular game ideas and organizes suggestion lists for the team would be nice. It could get a lot of good game ideas including blocks and other features in that truly reflects the desires of the community. 1/100 of the payout could have brought a person on for nearly a year at a decent wage.

I'm fine with him supporting his team but it really could have been kept quiet.

It's his money though man, not the company's. It's really up to him what he does with it, and I think it was a nice touch to use it to say thanks to the people that helped him get where he is.

Oh yeah! I could totally buy a 70m^2 flat somewhere in the extended center for that kinda money, would solve at least 3 different problems for me.

Isn't that Lydia's job? And/or Marc's. The only thing theoretically missing is a playtester.

Oh dear god no, keep the Minecraft community away from Mojang. Hiring someone with the express intent to give Jeb some more popular ideas is my idea of MC hell.

Sorry to go a little off topic here but I have to ask : Where does this quote come from ? I'm a huge fan of Terry Pratchett's novels but read them in French (translator is awesome)... please help me ;-)

To what you said : Yeah, I totally agree with that statement.

Well 1k a month for a rent isn't that huge, you're right. I don't know where you live in Canada, but in Paris the prices are awful. I live in a 20square meter 1 room flat 1km from Paris and it's around 600 Euros a month...
Being a student is expensive.

EDIT : By the way, thank you for answering my question Shengji ;-) And stop stealing your husband's pseudonym ^^ (just kidding)

I live in a big apartment with all commodities. I can have pets, smoke, I have a full bathroom, two bedrooms and a living room of about 40 square meters.

I pay 500 euros/month.

Yay!

Got the same except it's 60 meters (lodgia + cellar included) for the same dosh :).

'Cept's there's 4 of us living here. Me and my girl + another pair (friends, luckily)

Still, I'd probably pay less if I bought a flat with a mortage.

Oh please now you make me sad ! And I'm an engineer student so even if it won't be a few decades, it still makes a few years.
But meh : worth it.

All college tuition in Belgium is available for about 500 a year. Even though I'm not an engineer, I studied at an engineer school. College/university/whatever, everything is usually available for about that price. There's a few private marketing schools that ask like 15k, but that's only for the final year

Oh, we've got a government now, the president is a homosexual, socialist immigrant who grew up in the slums. It's pretty cool.
