Things you'd expect a useful dog to do?
Hey, I've reached the point with my Doggy Talents mod that I'm considering it pretty close to feature-complete. At the very least, all of the abilities I wanted to add when I started have been implemented. But I'm still open to suggestions/requests for some more skills to implement, and so I thought I'd ask around here:
Without any wolf abuse jokes, please, does anybody have any thoughts for something they'd like their dogs to be able to do?

Not certain if this is A) possible or B) already included (I haven't read about your mod since way back when): How about having the dog being able to return and put items in a predetermined chest? IE. you're out adventuring/spelunking and your inventory is full. You can choose to send your dog back with a number of items that are put into a certain chest and your dog return after a certain amount of time (mechanics wise perhaps the dog only disappears for a period of time and the items are added to the chest so no chunk updates are needed).

I don't have anything like that yet, no, but I do have inventory capacity for dogs. I'm not sure if this idea would be possible without editing base classes, but it does sound interesting...Urian wrote:Not certain if this is A) possible or B) already included (I haven't read about your mod since way back when): How about having the dog being able to return and put items in a predetermined chest? A dog mod is not complete until they start to eat away at your furniture or wooden blocks unless you attend to them on a regular basis.
You can add that as the Hardcore Doggie mode, like hardcore buckets :P

My one persistent thought is, dogs are supposed to be damn good hunters/locators.
So something I might be expecting from a dog to do is help me locate stuff.

(can you already?) throw a stick for them to fetch.
If you want, throw one over a ravine. xD

Yep, I'm aware of that characteristic of dogs, and I've done some stuff with it. They can be trained as hunters, which improves the drop rate from their victims, and they can be taught to locate creepers and act as a compass to the last place you slept.MoRmEnGiL wrote:My one persistent thought is, dogs are supposed to be damn good hunters/locators.

Yeah, I implemented fetch a little while ago.The great randomo wrote:(can you already?) throw a stick for them to fetch.

With the altered sleep mechanics in 1.0, give them an option to clear the area entirely of mobs so you can sleep in peace.
Maybe you awake to find them lying at your feet.
Btw, do you, or have you ever, had a dog?

Well if they can home in on creepers and other targets, what about training a dog to home in on TNT or alert you to it's presence like a bomb sniffer? It could be interesting in anarchy style SMP.
Sniffer dogs are pretty specialized in their training. Just a random thought: Maybe introducing the dog to a sample of a material you want to find could teach the dog to home in on that material but only that material.

Wouldn't that be a bit OP? I mean show a dog a diamond and it sniffs for more?

I considered an ability like that, but I decided against it for reasons I can't really remember, but I do remember being valid :DThe great randomo wrote:With the altered sleep mechanics in 1.0, give them an option to clear the area entirely of mobs so you can sleep in peace.

And yes, I have a dog, he's an Australian shepherd named Toby.

Mines a cross between a collie, a springer spaniel and a bedlington terrier. If you know anything about dogs, then you'll have guessed that he never runs out of energy!

Oh, is that the original picture? I didn't notice that cheating thing before...FlowerChild wrote:And in the same vein, don't forget playing poker. They're damn good at that.Caboose wrote:Play piano?
But anyway FlowerChild, do you actually have any ideas for skills? If you do, I'd love to hear it!
If not, however, I'm kinda trying to gather some, and, well, the sidetracking kinda doesn't help...

Why not have them fish for you?
Like have them go into a lake, and come back with a raw fish in their mouth that it drops at your feet.
Kind of like labs with hunting.
I think that'd be a cool/useful feature.
(btw, I have a 2 1/2 year old yellow lab named Matty)

they already can. In fact, you can automate it if you're creative (or cruel) enough!ThatOneDude wrote:Why not have them fish for you?

I had never really looked at this mod in full detail, but now I'm considering watching a few videos on it and probably getting it :)

Maybe go off in search of passive mobs to round up and bring back, like a sheepdog?

Thinking about some of the things I've seen my dogs do... you could have the wolves periodically vomit up grass or hemp seeds.
My dogs don't puke much anymore, but they do like to eat parts of their chew toys. Now that leads to an interesting idea. What if when wolves produce dung they have a 1/10 chance of also producing string?

That would be nice, but you're asking the wrong person. DTDoggies don't produce dung, not even with BTW, because they don't extend entitywolf.Folrig wrote:Thinking about some of the things I've seen my dogs do... you could have the wolves periodically vomit up grass or hemp seeds.
