As far as the slingshot explanation goes, the character was on the autistim spectrum and that scene was actually really well acted compared to pretty much any other depiction of autism in cinematic history. The fact that the story was able to use that as a way to show the audience how a gravity assist works was a little bit genius.

Thank you, Dave. I was thinking that I really liked that scene, but I couldn't place my finger on why.
