With the same amount of gunpowder and some sand, you can already fuck up a base at least as well in vanilla.

This is the first time this has ever happened to me accidentally. I didn't see it happen, but I suspect I accidentally dumped gunpowder into it.

I never knew the blast radius wasn't a fixed value. Now I have to go and make a few tests about the maximum/minimum.

I have never so far blown up a Cauldron, I'm way too paranoid for that.

I have thrown large quantities of ground netherrack to an unpowered hopper though, multiple times.

Only one time was it my direct fault though, usually it happened because it was raining. Duh. :P

I've blown up several cauldrons simply by being a fool. Well, the last time was because my elevator was yet to be fitted with a detector block to pause it at the right level, hence I smashed into the roof of what I call my "Tech Sector". A few stacks of gunpowder spurt from my smooshed remains into the uncovered water streams (I think it looks nicer :( ) directly to my cauldron. At least several wolves died in this event...

I made the mistake once, when I put the concentrated hellfire dust in the wrong cauldron... which was close enough to the unstoked cauldron to blow that one up too. I think I threw about 3 stacks of hellfire dust in... hehe, yeah, that village never looked quite the same after that.

I'm so glad this isn't true for the crucible, just today I made about 8 stacks of redstone dust in my glass making crucible...The thought that it would create a huge explosion didn't even occur to me.

Tell me, did I encounter a bug, luck, or is the stoked crucible indeed safe for concentrated hellfire->redstone synthesis?

As of yet I have never blown anything up except for my first attempt at hellfire dust. Totally didn't realize it had to be powered. other than that my base has been explosion free.

My first hardcore map ended because of hellfire dust in a cauldron. I threw it in and sat there to watch it work, then a second later realized I hadn't turned off the bellows... I don't play hardcore anymore.
