FlowerChild wrote:No, that's a vanilla rendering bug, and to my knowledge, they've yet to fix it. It's also an issue specifically related to texture-packs, so it's not something I'll be addressing myself.

Might happen when they finish rewriting the rendering code for 1.5 though.

I was speaking specifically of rendering bugs associated with the port to 1.4...not things in general.
Ok. Thanks for the info. I'm going to go bug Kahr now. :P

I'm ecstatic to hear about you tackling that pesky memory leak problem, FC! It's been plaguing Edolas, and i think Facefoiled is tired of resetting the server every day or two to fix it. XD

I'm sure with your coding expertise, it will be squashed in even less time than you think it will take. Now if only Mojang would dedicate themselves to bugfixing as much as you did... Though ill admit, they've been doing better than before, probably due to the SMP merge. Still, i think it's telling that every update of theirs seems to introduce 1000 new bugs while killing off 100, while yours seems to introduce 0-2 while quashing several plus the occasional vanilla bug. Keep up the awesome job! ^^b

Is that still happening with Edolas? I actually put the option to disable reliable block updates into the last release specifically so Face could test it out and see if it resolved the problem.

I've heard back from other server ops that it does take care of it though, which is why I'm spending time on this now.

So yeah, if he has in fact not toggled that option, I'd suggest poking him to do so :)

The only thing I'm doing for this next release is turning the reliable updates off by default in the config file, and putting in these sanity check to ensure that even when block updates are dropped (which still seemed to occasionally be happening even with reliable updates, as exemplified by the Buddy Block jam bug report), the mod blocks eventually realize it and adjust their state accordingly.

Addressing the memory leak itself will have to wait for a later release, as I suspect I'll have to spend a lot of time digging through the block update code to get to the bottom of it, and I'd still need these sanity checks anyways to ensure on the very rare occasion when updates are still dropped, blocks self-correct for it.

To be honest, i'm not sure if he disabled it or not. I think he did, because I know we didn't get nearly as much lag since he updated. However, i think he also did regular resets so I'm not entirely sure if it was due to that or due to the reliable update being disabled. It also turned out that the blade hosting our server failed too... so it might have been our crippling lag was also partly due to a failing server before it gave out? X_x So yeah, it's a bit up in the air on what fixed the problem. It does however, seem fixed, at least for the nonce.

Good news:

The single player port and all the gameplay adjustments I wanted to make are complete.

Tomorrow, I shall port to the server, and I strongly suspect we'll be seeing a 1.4 release sometime during the day.

For now: It's time for my Friday beers! :)

Good news! As I just mentioned on MCF:

The REAL Cauldron is back.

After renaming the vanilla Anvil, I decided that if I'm going to do stuff like that anyways, I may as well take care of something that's been bugging me for a long time anyways.

So...no more Stewing Pot. It's back to being the Cauldron, and the vanilla one is now called the "Cistern" :)

I was wondering what you were going to do with the vanilla anvil. Hurray for cauldron being back to its proper name!

I don't know, considering only use for vanilla Cauldron is washing leather armor renaming it to "Washtub" may be more fitting. Cistern sounds bit too modern to me.

Modern? Ummm...dude...
Origin:
1250–1300; Middle English cistern ( e ) < Latin cisterna, equivalent to cist ( a ) ( see cist1 ) + -erna noun suffix
Or more detailed on the roots:
cistern
mid-13c., from O.Fr. cisterne, from L. cisterna "underground reservoir for water," from cista "chest," from Gk. kiste "box, chest" (see chest).

Cannon ball? Hmmm, and here I thought it was going to be named "acme product 3254" :P

also, 'cistern' made me laugh a little on the inside. Good choice FC. :) (I laugh cuz the first image 'cistern' brought to mind was a device for the collection of refuse)

If it's to be changed into a renaming tool... As is my own assumption, I'd have to say... Well, there are two options I can think of.

One: A goofy option to go with the GIMP suit and such despite the use for tools is a branding stand...

Two: Something more to do with non-intensive detailing work an artisan's anvil
A knight without armor in a savage land.

"Cauldron" is similarly quite old. That's the word that my French-Canadian friends call that big kitchen pot that you cook spaghetti in.
In my neck of the woods, "cistern" is a pretty common term for a water storing tank that is buried underground.

Then bury your vanilla cauldron underground, voila! Got a cistern.

A cistern is a generic term for a container for liquid. Given the vanilla Cauldrons limited (as in nonexistent) use, it's a perfect fit for it.

I'll be honest, for some reason the first thing brought to mind when I read "cistern" was a medieval errm... bathroom waste pot.

Edit: Just so you know, when I read the new name for it, I smiled.

Heh. Cistern does seem a fitting name for it, though I've always read about cisterns being used as a means of collecting rain water?

That would be kinda neat to go and add a room to one's base to use it like a historical style actual cistern to a castle and it actually fill up by catching rainwater when it rains. Lulz that would actually make the cistern slightly less absurdly redundant. As it is right now filling it with water using a bucket, when if your filling it with water in the first place you probably have a water source nearby anyway. Redundant things like the vanilla cauldron bug the hell outta me I guess, cause I end up thinking about what if they had spent time instead on something more useful or well thought out. *sigh*
