Upcoming Design Change: Animals in the Nether

Post by FlowerChild »

I was originally planning on doing this for the initial 1.4.2 release of the mod, but upon further consideration, I want to spend a fair amount of time on this to get it right, and have decided to triage it for the time being as a result.

I just wanted to warn people that even though you'll be able to breed and keep animals in the nether with the first release, it's inadvisable to start building farms and automated breeding facilities there, as it will become problematic (in the Hardcore Chicken sense) in the very near future.

In that case I might want to do some breeding in the nether after you update for the giggle factor.

I so want to ban you right now.

But regardless, it won't help you anyways.

Thank you for not banning me.
I have never wanted to do any breeding in the nether, just not part of my play style but I would really love to see how you fixed it so you can't breed in the nether.

I run my own small personal server, and my friends rely on me to tell them about all the new BTW stuff, so once you've fixed the animals I might "accidentally" neglect to tell them about the exploding animals (if you follow the chickens reaction) and laugh at their horror :D

I find it humourous that your avatar/picture is so fitting with this comment.

Anyway, looking forward to see what interesting mechanics and changes you come up with, FC.

Heh heh. Man, if I played anarchy I would totally want to do that. It would be so hilarious to sneak into someone's base, free all their animals from their breeding traps, and lure the animals into their nether portal... xD

I can only imagine the hilarious "bug reports" for this.

"i had this huge nether cow farm and now my base is a smoking crater? what happend, PLZ fix"

Can't wait to see the awesome nuclear aftermath the day the Nether Strikes Back

I can imagine zombie pigmen being upset that their cousin pigs are being mass-produced. Seeing piggies in tiny pens being force-fed and force-bred will cause them to form the organization ZPETA (Zombie Pigmen for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), and picket our nether farms...

Will you be changing the behaviour of animals in the End too?

From what iv'e seen from other peoples assumptions about these animals in the nether exploding, i have one thing to add to this. Make a lot of nether portals around a particular nether fortress, we shall say. And let the animals go through the nether portal. Thus creating an easy and very renewable, mobile land clearing method. :D Let the games begin!

Just a quick notice that these changes will also affect animals in the end dimension (I changed the thread title to reflect this).

I've finally settled on a concept of what will happen to them in the end dimension that I'm quite pleased with as it ties into what I did with water in the end recently. Together, they should form a underlying concept of what's going on in the end, and give it a unique feel.

Infinitely duplicating water confined within a biological shell of ever-building pressure until said shell explodes?
On the internet you can be whatever you want. It's surprising so many people choose to be stupid.

I never even thought about breeding in the nether and now I'm thinking about it I can't think of any big advantages. So why are you going to change this? The only reasons I can think of: Moving animals trough the nether takes less rails than trough the overworld and animals in the nether doesn't feel right. So what do you aim to improve in gameplay terms with this change?

FC has stated before that he dislikes the way vanilla is blending elements of the game together, such as giving xp for mining/smelting, as well as farming netherwart in the overworld. He has also removed both of these.

Essentially he is against being able to do everything anywhere, in a small compact space. By preventing animals from living/breeding in the nether, he is diversifying our play experience by forcing us to spread our builds out.

It interferes with the diversity in gameplay and aesthetics between dimensions, taking the game further down Mojang's path towards homogenous gruel.

Thanks FC and Dnoved1, this does explain it very well. Understanding it better and now fully supporting this change (if your care :D). It does strengthen the clear vision FC has on infrastructure and functional building.

Edited the title since the change to The End are done, and only the ones to the Nether remain.
