Automating Companion Cubes?

Post by Pentagram »

Is there any way to automate the creation of companion cubes?

Wolves cannot breed when they're sat, so they need to be standing. This means that they would teleport to you.
Breeding harnesses cannot be placed on wolves.
When wolves DO breed, the baby is spawned under one of the parents (as vMC animals do).

So, is there any way to automate wolf breeding?

I want to create an automatic companion cube factory... just for fun!
Plus, I have this huge cliff face, which I've taken back a few blocks (may do it with the entire cliff) just outside my new home, and I want to have the BTW Logo on it, with an automatic companion cube factory just inside :D

Any ideas, anyone?

You could try with carts.

But then how would I get the baby out? :/
The baby needs to be turned into a cube after it grows up, which is another thing I'm trying to work out

I'm curious to see what happens once Battosay sees this :3

Personally, though, I wouldn't know where to start :s I'm looking forward to seeing the design process develop in this thread ^_^

This discussion has come up before. The short answer is, you can't. The long answer is, it can be semi automated in the sense of feeding and cubing. You will have to manually sit and stand your wolves however.

Wait, has anyone tried adding powered rails so the wolves would collide with each other, breed, and then knock their newborn off the rails?

This was actually one of my biggest questions when I made the Systems Flowchart but I couldn't come up with any real way to automate it, although I hope it's possible at some point.

As do I. The companion cube (and its accompanying companion slab) are among my favourite blocks in BTW. Along with the obvious BD/DB/Hopper.
I hope I can fully automate them soon =P

I'm rather interested in this, as well. I discovered recently that companion slabs have a very special feature that no other block has. It can sit in front of a powered saw without being broken or breaking the saw.

I originally used them on sticky pistons to push mobs directly into saws in a waterless mob trap. Might be very useful on HCB worlds in traps in the nether/end, where getting water there is impossible, with or without screw pumps.

I've also seen many vanilla-style tree farms, where the entire trunk of the tree is pushed away using sand and then put in front of a saw one block at a time. A row of companion slabs would allow you to "flush out" the wood from the system, without damaging the saw.

Yeah um that sounds exactly like an exploit.

I wont report it until I can confirm it after work, but I'm pretty sure this isn't intended.

Just checked and indeed neither of them break. I'll go report it now :P

I thought this was a feature. You place your faithful companion cube in front of the saw and all that remains is its lower half.

It doesn't make sense for a companion slab to break a saw. But there is no "quartered companion" to which the companion slab can be halved.

The companion slab should be too short for the saw blade to reach anyway.

Do wool half slabs break the saw? If not then this may be okay. If so, then companion slabs are an odd exception that may be considered an exploit.

I did check before reporting.
All 'hard' slabs break the saw.
Wooden slabs split into mouldings.
Wool slabs drop the wool slab again.
Wicker drops wicker again (similar to wool slab)
