I agree with you on that FC, I am surprised he hasn't tried to make a new game that utilized at least most of the base mechanics that made minecraft great. Oh well time will tell right?

I think it mostly because the way Notch likes to program. I think it is because Notch is more of a programmer then he is a game designer, which is to say he enjoy the challenge of creating something to see if he can do it, rather then build onto something that already exist. Now I am not saying he is a bad programmer quite the opposite actually, he just seems to loose focus on what he is doing once he realized there nothing really "New" or "Challenging" he can add. those are my observation anyway, add I am probably not explaining it correctly lol.

To be fair, Minecraft's success is almost entirely an accident. Which is to say, Mojang didn't so much have a good product with a good business plan, as they hit the lottery. And they kinda act like it.

Yup, I agree with both of you. I'm certainly not begrudging Mojang for their success, just after so long in the industry often busting my ass on crappy titles, it does break my heart to see some of the money-making potential of Minecraft being partially squandered.

Most people in the industry, myself included, can only dream of a success that huge and spend our careers never attaining it.

If only there were a middle ground between clueless indie developers and self-righteous big companies. There's too few small, but experienced studios.

Agreed. From an individual developer standpoint, the industry has definitely changed for the worse in the past decade. The large corporate studios were a big factor in what killed my passion for making games professionally.

I just consider myself lucky to have caught the tail-end of the old industry and had the chance to work with some really exceptional small studios and crazed talented individuals.

Anyways, maybe one of these years I'll get off my ass and start something up for myself.

Still not a whole lot to report for the last couple days. Mojang is still focused on the resolution of Mojam.

Are they going to be improving the AI for all mobs before the release of 1.2 or just a few?

My impression has been that while they plan to have all the mobs on the new AI system by 1.2, only a few mobs will actually have any change to their behaviour by then.

It seems that they are bringing in update just to say that they have released it. They should really finish what they are doing and have larger amounts of time between updates.

Well, with the change to 8 bits of metadata (as I understood) They would probably also replace the half-blocks with panels, like in BTW.

I havn't seen that mentioned anywhere by mojang, it was just something FC e-mailed jeb about - I think he'd probably have mentioned it if there was a reply.

vMC all of a sudden has a lot more licence to add extra blocks due to the extra IDs though. We'll be seeing a lot of this kinda thing in coming updates, you can be sure.

Actually, Jeb commented about half slabs today as well:
Jeb wrote: Not doing up-side-down half-slabs right now, but maybe later. Next week will be bug-fixing week for a possible 1.2 release
Edit: Oh, and here's the comment about more bits:
Block ids have been increased to 4096 (was 256) by adding a 4 bit data layer (similar to how meta data is stored)

And we've also got a timeframe for when we can expect 1.2 to be out:
jeb_ wrote:Not doing up-side-down half-slabs right now, but maybe later. Next week will be bug-fixing week for a possible 1.2 release
Two or three weeks is my guess, depending on how much time they spend on bugfixes. Unless the new trees need the extra headroom, I probably won't do anything with 1.2 until I can find a mod that pushes sea level up to 128, though, as I'd rather have a deeper world than more space in the sky.

Is that a golem? It looks like it could be a lot of fun to watch bowl through zombies.

Well, either a golem or a hulked-out Villager. I like it!

Having poked around in the snapshot on a superflat world, I can confirm that they are pretty strong - it only takes them two hits to kill a zombie. However, they are also too big to fit through the doors, so if zombies can corner villagers in a building, they won't be able to do anything. I've also had a case where a zombie stayed in a house, and the village's defender refused to pick a new target. While a good idea, it needs work.
