How do I put food on a campfire?

I'm trying to cook some meat for the second night, but for some reason I just can't place any food on my campfire. I tried right clicking the campfire with some beef, but whenever I do, it just tries eating the beef instead of placing it on the campfire. I tried dropping it, but that wouldn't make sense, so what am i supposed to do?
