How do I add non-jar addons?

Have been trying to do this for 2 days now. I might just be stupid, idunno.
Also, just chucking them into the mods folder prevents the game from starting.
Can provide logs or other info.

Before latest BTW added Fabric, you had to add the addon zip files into your Minecraft jar directly.
