That would make sense to me. If Steve can make an iron saw blade or an Iron Pick, I dont think that casting some stone or Iron gears is too far out of his abilities. Replacing all of the gears in his gear boxes would make them much strong to boot. Perhaps in a version or two this could be implemented?

It is a tad frustrating when trying to power an elevator though. The windmill disconnecting has lead to me being trapped halfway down a shaft many a time. Which of course begs the question why I don't just power the thing by water wheel in the first place.
