I just build with all my stuff out of cactus, that way it's completely safe.
Also, regardless of how lighting rods interact with lightning though, they do prevent it from starting fires, which is what is important, no?

Spawn range is limited to about two thousand blocks in each direction from initial spawn. It's quite possible to create landmarks that cover this range (may I recommend the great wall of cactus?). Roads are a nice example that also allows you to get back to base quicker.

Yup, it was somewhere on that order (several hours at least). Also, whisp's gold farm is much more effective in regards to production per time.
I suppose in the end it's more of a nice bonus to finding the temples, and helps to pay for the invisibility potions ;)

I get this on normal biomes as well.
Over a course of 3 to 5 temples, I managed to get a similar amount of gold, while searching for vessels.

Kilns appear to be unable to display multiple "breaking" overlays. Example pic below:
Only one texture is shown at a time, though it will switch around depending on the angle you view it at.

I can confirm that it isn't a texture error, as I was with gates on the mining trip using the default texture pack and saw it as normal stone.

Well, it's not really a plugin at this point, as the word plugin implies there's some sort of api that I'm using to extend functionality.
However this will be a server side only mod, which does as you describe. (Monitor client <--> server traffic and make decisions based upon such)

Just thought I'd mention that the stakes are likely out as an option, though I like them. Using stakes would require decompiling BTW, which I am trying to avoid, for simplicity.

I don't know about the other directions, but when I headed south I was able to get to unexplored/unsettled areas fairly quickly (maybe a 10-15 min walk).
