Re: how many times have you HC spawned?
I made this world a month ago (shortly after the steel changes). Already, I can remember 8 bases right off the top of my head, though I'm sure there's at least half of that more. And I don't have the slightest clue where any of my bases are in relation to each other! There is no single one of them t...

Re: Cool Life on Mars video
I used to often wonder myself about what kinds of completely different life forms could exist. And there's some pretty creative ideas in that video. However, watching it now brings to mind a certain fascinating concept in biology known as convergent evolution. Multiple times in the history of the ea...

Re: In-game explanation for slabs preventing mob spawning?
*snip* You're almost there, but the method is not quite sound. I mean, when you get down to things at a quantum level, you can't really talk about individual particles like that, as they're only an observable result of the underlying wavefunctions. We must find the wavefunction! What we have here i...

The radius for overlapping portals is surprisingly large The server I'm on- my portal dropped into an already existing pair, overworld distance between mine and his was roughly 800 blocks or so. (works out about a half days walk once slabbed and clear of tall grass) Yep. Sounds about right for the ...

Well, looks like this will be the week everybody finally gets that "three streetpasses in a row playing the same game" achievement. (\o/?) I'm happily bumbling around like a fool in the Japanese version, burning fairies for warmth with an internet fire chicken, trying to understand why a j...

That I assume will link to the one at my base and since the one I come out will be extinguished by the ghasts, I'm good to go. Definitely this, it should link to the same portal in the overworld. Mmm, depends on how far that wall is. You can hope for the best, but I suggest you prepare for the wors...

Gold can be found in the second strata, you just have to look hard. Try to intersect a cave; listen for when you hear monsters bobbling about, and dig towards them. With respect to that, my advice is not to branch mine, but rather just dig straight until you hear noises. If you keep mining branches ...

Re: Those are some melons
The slices. One melon = 2.5 hunger bars, about.
The annoyance of having to chew them does remain a motivating factor, but each individual slice restores enough to "feel" worth it to me (as opposed to cocoa/pumpkins).

Those are some melons
Melons make many seeds and restore a lot of hunger. After finding some melon seeds in an abandoned mineshaft, I very quickly found myself able to make a melon farm large enough to sustain my life without any other sources of food. I no longer feel any pressure to go out hunting, start a chicken farm...

When I see a bunch of pumpkins outside, and I haven't got a hoe yet, I... I take a few. And I... spread them out a little, you know? Like, just... dropping one every now and then as I hunt. I do it because... you know... it's just wrong that there's so many pumpkins just there in that one little spo...

Re: The Long Dark
Meh. The take-home message I got from both the description and the video is "simulation." It's got thirst, hunger, temperature, and all the other things you've gotta micromanage in all the other survival games... but without the interesting game mechanics that make other games fun.

I've actually been wanting to write one of these kinds of things for a while but... like with everything else, it seems I have a tendency to either write too much, or nothing at all. So I'll just leave it at this: BTW has irrevocably changed the way I perceive most games, and the way I feel while pl...

I've tried replacing the files and tagging them read only, just to have Minecraft ignore them. I believe it does either a filesize check or hash check on the audio files and if they don't match it's no go. Not quite. If you press F3+S in-game, it should load them; it just throws up on the read-only...

Re: Has anyone else fallen in love with diamond shovels?
Heh, I remember one person in the IRC even teasing me about the diamond shovel in my hotbar. Back when I was starting my ocean base, they were the greatest thing ever. That one diamond extends the life of the shovel tremendously. Even if you don't need to do a lot of digging, it's a pretty fair inve...

The new redstone recipes are described in the change log (readme.txt) where they were added in version 4.85. For the lever, do the same way as in vanilla but add redstone below the cobble. Buttons and Pressure Plates now use Corners and Sidings respectively; place redstone dust under one of these in...

Actually... yeah. Even among the small number of times I've respawned, there is already a place that has given me major deja vu a couple of times; one specific spot where I believe I have respawned multiple times (at least 3), not within the HCS timer. Now, because you have me thinking about this, I...

Re: Help Fixing World Corruption?
The best way to fix world corruption is to be prepared before it happens. Even just a daily backup before playing means you'll never lose more than a day's work. From what you're saying ("consumed by chunk errors"), it sounds like there is a big permanent hold in your world where those chu...

After gathering much surface coal and some easily a...

I'm a little worried about the food source since I'll need to go further and further away just to find food, and until I find a village, which will be quite some time I won't have the domestic crops. One sort of animal that you are able to - and should definitely try to - keep around are Chickens; ...
