Re: The BTSM/BTW divide
I imagine a big part of it is probably the nature of the people who play the games. Minecraft is easy. By nature and by design, it's overwhelmingly more creative. There's no emphasizing things like certain builds to prevent monsters from popping up. You just light the place with torches. Material is...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion
I definitely think we'll be hearing about Minecraft 2 soon. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they bought Minecraft for its clout- they've probably been developing a voxel game for who knows how long now? It wouldn't surprise me if they did it to simply to get the title slapped on there. I...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion
Interesting! It's easy to forget how much is going on under the hood, honestly. It seems like it's always a new item here, a new functionality there but in a sparingly trivial way. A new armor stand, new slime block mechanics. I tend to forget Minecraft is probably one of the first truly "next-...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion
Errrr....no, it's currently only in prerelease as far as I know :) What you're probably thinking of is when Jeb half-implemented it a couple of years back. Then it just sat idle until now in an incomplete state. Forge went and finished up his code which is why a lot of mods had extended blockIDs be...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion
Now that they've sorted extended "block IDs" it makes more sense, which is probably why they're releasing this kind of thing now. In the past, no, it wouldn't have made a whole lot of sense as they would have consumed the 256 available ones very rapidly had they done that. That makes more...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion
I wanna say it was Etho or Guude. I was watching one of their videos and remember one of them mentioning it. It's amazing to me that this sort of thing isn't done automatically. When you add a new wood or stone, wouldn't it make sense to make sure you have everything that the other woods/stones have...

Re: Flower's Dev Diary (March 31st) - Cold hard truth editio
It's going to be a little trickier for RTH mind you as given I'm going to be developing it professionally and not just as a hobby I'm going to have to be careful about how much information I let out to reduce the likelihood of others beating me to the punch on fully developing my own ideas. There's...

Re: Flower's Dev Diary (March 31st) - Cold hard truth editio
Hey, FC. I was curious and I hope this isn't too off-topic or too meta. When you switch over to RTH development, will you be doing regular dev diaries or do you feel they distract too much from the development itself? I ask because I always get really excited to read what you write about your develo...

If it's any consolation, everyone here understands entirely. We've all hit those roadblocks in our lives and probably can understand one hundred percent the stresses it takes on us when our plans are set back. It can be difficult to remember that you're a real person on the other end of the line whe...

Re: Vanilla Minecraft News Discussion
IMO, one of the real strengths of MC and one of the aspects that originally made it brilliant is that it provides a unified world that the player can manipulate to their heart's content in a consistent fashion. With the new games it's like the designers are fighting against that brilliance in an at...

I've got Pixel Piracy installed but haven't taken the time to sit down and play yet. However, between BTW and Don't Starve, I've gotten used to it. It seems like cleaning the ship SHOULD be a natural part of the game. I'm tired of games that give a simplified experience. I want something fresh from ...

Re: Music and Zombie Apocalypses
I was watching World War Z (I'm a sucker for anything Zombie, even the crappy stuff) And it just occurred to me: If Zombies are always drawn to sound, why don't they ever get a whole bunch of speakers outside and blast some music? If car alarms draw zombies, a rave will save the world! Any thoughts...

Re: How to Gain Courage to Progress
A combination of desire to explore and figuring out what's next is enough for me. The challenge and the curiosity is enough to motivate me to move forward. The fact that so much is locked off to you in the beginning is enough to make me want to move forward. I personally wanna unlock higher techs ju...

Re: Rune Factory
I'd recommend Rune Factory 3. One and two are great, but three fixed a lot of issues that were in both. They're self-contained stories with a few references that don't seem like references, they seem like backstory. I haven't played them in a whiiiile. I don't remember the features right off the bat...

Re: The Question Of Multiplayer in RTH
I feel like that sort of gameplay would only work in RTH if you intended on creating a survival game crossed with a creation game. Oh, I most certainly intend to do precisely that. I think RTH could be summed up as "BTW on steroids". I basically plan to take many of the design concepts I'...

Re: The Question Of Multiplayer in RTH
The fundamental difference between BTW and Minecraft tells me that it would much better to have a solid single-player with deep gameplay. Minecraft requires that you make your own entertainment whereas BTW facilitates your entertainment with a ball-park guideline. The only way I could see multiplaye...

I logged in for the first time in a few weeks because I just wanted to drop a nice word your way, FC. I admit that I'd very nearly given up on RTH and BTW for a while there. I knew you were working on BTSM but hadn't realized how long it had been since the last update. I've got plans on doing an LP ...

Re: New Release! (BTW V4.891124)
What amazes me most, Flower, is the fact that you still find stuff to tweak and change to sharpen game play so well. Having looked through the change log, it's impressive to me how you can take the default Minecraft settings and change just those to get a completely different game play experience. N...

NOTE: This may apply to other weather patterns, but I'm currently only seeing it in snow since that's what I'm dealing with. I'm just barely past having a base with a decent little food supply- but nothing growing and seriously need to either herd animals or migrate to a new location anyway. I have ...

It really seems to me that terrain generation should have been handled before entities, tools, etc. I mean, shouldn't that have been handled in alpha? They completely threw out the meaning of alpha and beta.

I love when I find an area that looks like it's my base, only to find out it's a new area. It's a quick succession of, "Oooh! Aww... Oh!" Especially when the new area has an awesome layout of various resources or just looks scenic. I don't mind dying because I love the exploration factor o...

I can definitely understand that. Of all the communities that have risen up around games, Minecraft has one of the widest bases- more diversity but also plenty of younger kids. Not always a good thing for peace of mind. Here's to your own personal peace of mind, at least. Hopefully the stress of red...
